How Black Pod Supply Management Works

Effective black pod supply management requires coordinated efforts across multiple interventions. The disease progresses rapidly once infection occurs, with small yellow spots expanding into complete pod coverage within 8-10 days. Phytophthora produces millions of sporangia that disperse through rain-splash, reaching healthy pods up to several meters away. Secondary infection cycles accelerate during high-humidity periods, creating exponential disease spread without intervention. Echelon Cocoa’s black pod supply program breaks these infection cycles through systematic removal of diseased pods before sporulation peaks. Combined with cultural practices that reduce environmental conditions favoring Phytophthora, the program creates hostile conditions for pathogen survival and reproduction. Participating farmers receive training on disease recognition, optimal removal timing, proper disposal methods, and preventive cultural practices proven to reduce infection rates across Cameroonian cocoa production systems.
